Michael E. Berend, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and the co-founder of Midwest Center for Joint Replacement, with two locations in Indianapolis and Bloomington, Indiana.Dr. Berend always loved science and health. He studied chemistry at Hanover College and went on to pursue orthopedic surgery at Duke University Medical Center, where he was elected to AOA and was the commencement class speaker. Dr. Berend moved to Mooresville, Indiana, to complete a fellowship in joint replacement surgery at the Center for Hip and Knee Surgery, and he continued to practice there for 16 years.
Not only is Dr. Berend an expert in his craft, but he is also an innovator. During the past decade, he has helped design multiple hip, knee, and partial knee implant systems. He has trained over 3,000 surgeons in his specialized surgical techniques and published over 100 peer-reviewed articles in medical journals. He is a former member in the USA of both the Knee Society and the Hip Society. Dr. Berend has been recognized by his peers as one of the top surgeons in North America.
Dr. Berend is deeply passionate about his career. He travels internationally with Team Hope in Motion, a Christian medical mission organization performing free joint replacements in Guatemala.
Dr Berend has worked as a Development Partner with SurgCenter for 14 years and a Principal and Managing Partner for the past 3 years developing over 25 centers focused on transforming outpatient joint replacement care nationally.
