Case Examples

CT coronary angiogram showing single vessel, non bifurcation stenosis in a low complexity patient

Single vessel coronary disease interventions in stable, low complexity patients are the staple use case for a CV ASC as the balance the benefit/risk of performing off-site coronary intervention. As in the inpatient space, these patients follow rapid post procedural ambulation protocols and have low rates of procedural complications.

Cardiac devices in stable patients with well compensated disease states

New implants, generator exchanges, and ILRs are predictable procedures that have very low rates of periprocedural complications and benefit greatly from procedural areas that provide efficient throughput.

Minimally invasive endovascular interventions in low complexity patients

Peripheral interventions including renal denervation are ideal for the ambulatory setting as the low acuity and ability to manage unplanned periprocedural outcomes safely make for an optimal benefit/risk ratio.

AF ablation and WATCHMAN procedures

With the advent of safer and more efficient ablation and LAAO devices, it is expected that a large number of these procedures will be performed in an ambulatory setting. For the first time, physicians can capture global reimbursement offsetting deep cuts that have minimized professional reimbursement codes.

ASC 101

What is an Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC)?

An Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC) is a specialized healthcare facility focused on providing same-day, elective, procedural care. Unlike traditional hospitals, ASCs do not commonly offer overnight stays—patients are admitted, treated, and discharged within 24 hours. ASCs are designed for efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and most importantly patient satisfaction, handling procedures that don’t require extensive recovery or complex inpatient care.

Key Characteristics:
  • Outpatient focus: No overnight hospitalization. Predictable procedures.
  • Licensed and regulated: Must meet state and often federal (Medicare) standards.

What are the Benefits of ASCs?

For Patients:
  • Lower costs (e.g., ~$684 less per procedure vs. hospitals).
  • Faster recovery at home with loved ones.
  • Reduced infection risk due to shorter stays.
For Providers:
  • Greater control over scheduling and operations.
  • Higher efficiency and profitability per case.

Would an ASC be Right for Me?

SCD offers a no commitment evaluation to determine if your group dynamics are a good fit.

The most common reasons for ASC failure are an underappreciation of volume, unknown regulatory requirements, and an underappreciation of operational oversight.

As an equity partner, ASC is incentivized to help mitigate these risks significantly and maintain continued profitability.
